Finger Grip or Muscular Movement?

Developing a Cursive Handwriting Style & Practice

Part of my reasons for wanting to develop my handwriting was also to increase my ability to write with muscular/arm movement.

Muscular Movement was developed in the 1880s by Austin Palmer. Palmer, a native of New York, developed the style while living in Iowa.

The idea was to create a writing technique that relied on the arm muscles to help people write easily and legibly for longer periods of time.

In turn, the technique would also decrease the pain associated with a tighter finger grip on one’s writing instrument, typically associated with finger and wrist muscle writing.

In this quick clip, I am writing the word “noun” with my best attempts at muscular movement.

The writing instrument is held loosely, while securely, between the fingers, but their is no gripping of the pen/pencil as such.

All the movement comes from the arm.

Even though I am in early stages of my practice, it does feel better - although not quite natural as yet - than writing with my finger and wrist muscles.

I do feel the flow and movement of muscular arm writing to be more freeing.

Having said that, I’m not certain that I could write for hours on end in this manner, but perhaps as my arm muscles gain more strength, this feeling might change.

See you on Day 10 :)

Happy handwriting!
